Summary

Even robots hate to work! More poets should write sci-fi。 This novel, told in dream logic memo-like dispatches, incorporates many well-worn ideas and features of space exploration stories and human/android drama but somehow makes it all strange and beguiling again。 The alien object nicknamed Reverse Strap-on, brilliant。

Very original。 I am still processing the book and may re-read (it's a very swift read), but I love science fiction narratives that focus on the idea of what makes people humans (and whether non-humans can have these qualities and what it means if they do), so it grabbed me from the start。 Very original。 I am still processing the book and may re-read (it's a very swift read), but I love science fiction narratives that focus on the idea of what makes people humans (and whether non-humans can have these qualities and what it means if they do), so it grabbed me from the start。 。。。more

Abstract artsy fartsy if you like that sort of thing。 I don’t。

Experimental Sci-Fi that deals with questions of what it means to be human。 Blade Runner meets Solaris written by somedody who is really into performance art and video installation art and is only interested in the genre as a very loose framework。

From the statements, you may guess that it is a humans or humanoid。 But as you progress, those presume characteristics begin to blur and that’s what I think makes a human。

Olga Ravn presents a truly innovative exploration of the boundary between human and AI "consciousness"。 The Employees is a collection of human and humanoid testimonies among workers aboard Six Thousand Ship。 Their mission is to collect hypnotic humming objects from a planet and, beyond that, the plot and stakes and any sense of orientation toward a protagonist are all humming hypnotically too。 Simmering in Vandermeerian weirdness, the reader finishes feeling as if it might have been a Hering ill Olga Ravn presents a truly innovative exploration of the boundary between human and AI "consciousness"。 The Employees is a collection of human and humanoid testimonies among workers aboard Six Thousand Ship。 Their mission is to collect hypnotic humming objects from a planet and, beyond that, the plot and stakes and any sense of orientation toward a protagonist are all humming hypnotically too。 Simmering in Vandermeerian weirdness, the reader finishes feeling as if it might have been a Hering illusion and those curvy lines are actually straight and it had meaning but you just had to look at it in a certain light。 Then you look again but you still don't see it but somehow you're kind of entertained anyway。 。。。more

Management will still need to get involved, send a team, kick off some kind of process? So the book is a sequence of reports, memos from team members。 And they start kind of bland, empty of tension, cleverly suggesting the complicated economic and social context the crew occupies without describing it (this is not a Kim Stanley-Robinson novel)。 The memos hint at the drama to come and - without spoiling it too much - the tension does build and things do get bad。My favourite kind of book is a short book, and this one's short - you'll read it in a couple of hours (the page-count is deceptive since many have only a sentence of text)。 But it's full of ideas, it has an unexpected emotional charge that builds and there's real beauty in the scenes we visit。 It's translated from Danish and I'm not equipped to tell you if it's been done well - but the language is authenticly that of a workplace in crisis and the bloodless, rules-bound terminology of human resources and people management is chilling。The story is told only by the workers, by the actors in the workplace drama。 It's a one-sided interrogation。 We don't hear the voices of the HR team sent to investigate, the managers who decide how to resolve things。 I can imagine an excellent sequel that flips the story around so we can understand the whole story, why the ship was dispatched, the purpose of obscure mission and why they chose to act in the way they did。 。。。more

4。75! Loved almost all the sections of this book, are we human? What defines us as human?

A novel about the modern state of capitalism, employment, and AI but exciting insights into these themes are notably absent。 Also it probably should have been a short story instead of a novel。

Everything about this screams at me to love it。 Its a surreal, clinical examination of humanity and what it means to exist in a hyper-professional, hyper-capitalist dreamscape of procedure and routine。 And while I love that, and I find myself enthralled by the occasional section, or the occasional line, the sum never matched the potential of its parts for me。 It was too disconnected, too clinical in its structure but at the same time too poetic in its prose (some of the authenticity in the indiv Everything about this screams at me to love it。 Its a surreal, clinical examination of humanity and what it means to exist in a hyper-professional, hyper-capitalist dreamscape of procedure and routine。 And while I love that, and I find myself enthralled by the occasional section, or the occasional line, the sum never matched the potential of its parts for me。 It was too disconnected, too clinical in its structure but at the same time too poetic in its prose (some of the authenticity in the individual transcripts is lost when every other being is delivering these complex philosophical musings that read more like a poetry collection than a ship's journal manifest)。 I feel like I'm missing something that makes all this work the way others seem to experience it, and maybe I'll find that missing piece in the future, but for now this just didn't quite work for me。 。。。more

3。5 stars rounded up。 Puzzling, disturbing, and quite provocative (but not really very funny, not even in a dark humor or satirical way, despite the dust jacket description)。 The reader is obliged to figure out exactly what’s going on here…there’s a spaceship, a human and human-like crew, strange objects from a far-from-Earth (but seemingly Earth-like) planet…and the story is told all in excerpts from interviews with the increasingly fractious and divided crew members。 It’s less science fiction 3。5 stars rounded up。 Puzzling, disturbing, and quite provocative (but not really very funny, not even in a dark humor or satirical way, despite the dust jacket description)。 The reader is obliged to figure out exactly what’s going on here…there’s a spaceship, a human and human-like crew, strange objects from a far-from-Earth (but seemingly Earth-like) planet…and the story is told all in excerpts from interviews with the increasingly fractious and divided crew members。 It’s less science fiction than it is a novel (however elliptical and fragmented the narrative) about work, capitalism, what it is to be human (or not), and alienation from oneself and others。 That’s what I got out of it, at least。 Interested to hear reactions from any other readers! 。。。more

Millaista on työnteko 2100-luvulla?

What a gorgeous look into what makes a person — or thing — human。 Sitting at under 150 pages, this was a quick read, but every page was full of emotion and thought-provoking。An exploration of how people bond with the inhuman when they are in isolation, as well as an exploration of what defines humanity。 I think I found at least one sentence on every page that made me pause and consider mortality and the scope of emotion。 I rarely say this, but I’m already looking forward to rereading this book。

Think I would have liked this a bit more if it was sliiiiiiightly more traditionally structured。 Some great lines throughout, but it read more like a collection of poems than a novel。
